Mona Lisa smile?
I often use famous movie titles to introduce my posts and typically I choose those movies that I associate to the topic I am going to cover in the post. Of course the association is absolutely arbitrary and the link between the movie and the post content might be apparent to me and to nobody else. In this case I think the link is more apparent than usual, if you have seen the movie that is.
Little events and circumstances which occurred in the past weeks brought me to think about the topic of women education and how does this play a role in the closing of the gender gap. You would say that this role is OBVIOUS daaa!!!! Yes you are right education play a huge and fundamental role but I will tell you one thing education is 100% accessible to women in the western world already since quite a long time! Why is that that the gender gap in the western world is still there and what keeps it in stand?
You can try to answer this question with a lot of statistics and data from all kind of sources, but that is kind of dry and boring. You can try to describe it using stereotypes, politically incorrect but usually not far from the truth. I will try to approach it from a quite unusual angle, I will give you my description of the typical man that keeps the gender gap alive and kicking and of the typical man that does not.
They both have the same age not too young not too old, they have received the same education can either be lower or higher (it does not really matter). It is in their character really and in what they see and look for in a woman.
The gender "gapist" believes in family as traditional cornerstone of society, he is not necessarily conservative but he likes to retire in his safe haven at the end of the heavy working day. He is clever and successful in his work from the outside you would say that he is a man of the world. In his safe haven there are his wife and children waiting for him.
He will have nice conversations about nothing and forget everything about the outside world. His wife does not have any particular ambition besides being happy and comfortable in her marriage with the husband he loves and the children she raises. He likes it that way and he loves her dearly and he is proud of her (without really bothering to know why). Mind you, her education level does not really matter, it is probably similar to the one of him. It does also not really matter whether she works or not.
The gender gapless on the other hand is not so sure of himself. He doubts the world around him and does not give anything for granted. He lives his family life with the same critical eye as anything else in his life giving nothing for granted.
The woman he chose is the other major shareholder in the family household, more than the carer described above. It does not matter what he thinks about this situation, he just simply loves her even though she makes his life not one inch easier. But life is not easy and he knows that. There is no safe haven and he knows it makes no sense to try to build one. He will always be exposed to the high winds. Better be exposed with a partner that is used to it as well he thinks. Also in this case education level and work type do not really make a difference.
For the men among my readers I wonder if you can recognize yourself in one or the other model. I know of course the man I would marry, or better I know the man I married!
And by the way, watch the movie, if you are interested in this topic of course.
