Valentine oh my Valentine
Today is Valentine's Day and I am stuck in bed with a stomach bug. Not that I had wild plans mind you but still it feels like a bummer.
Of all the overrated commercial festivities Valentine's Day is by far my favorite and not only because I am an hopeless romantic but also because it unleashes lots of references to great movies and books and songs.
All around the internet you can see the top 10 best kisses in the history of cinema or the top 20 most romantic songs ever or the best love stories in the world literature.
I cannot resist and will give you my personal list for what it is worth.
1) Best kiss in a movie
Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca
2) Best romantic movie
Twilight
3) Best romantic song from a movie
A whole new world from Aladdin and ex equo I will always love you from The Bodyguard
4) Best love story in literature
Viola and Duke Orsino in the Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare
5) Best romantic novel
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
and last but not least
6) Most heart breaking unrequited love in literature
Ralph Touchett vs. Isabel Archer in A Portrait of a Lady by Henry James
After almost 17 years together of which 10 years as a married couple you kind of hardly remember how it felt to have butterflies in your stomach especially while you are running through the brutal daily routine. Well on Valentine's day I do, I do remember how it felt and most important I do remember why.
And even though you don't hear Puccini in your head (to quote another romantic classic "The Mirror has two faces") anymore at each goodnight kiss, the why you still know every day.
Long live Valentine's Day then for the ones that are in love and for the ones that love love
