God wears Prada

It has been many years since I last participated to the celebration of one of the most important rites of passage in Catholic religion, the First Communion. This time I even had an official role since the First Communion in question was the one of my nephew and godson Matteo.
As Godmother I was entrusted with a role of great responsibility which no doubt would effect my nephew's entire future, the selection of the outfit he should wear.
Times have pretty much changed since I did my First Communion. In the good old days boys would be required to dress as white monks and girls as withe nuns. Nowadays they are allowed to wear civilian clothes but as you can imagine this term is pretty generic.
Some google search and an afternoon of shopping proved sufficient to complete the task to satisfaction and now we only needed to wait for the big day itself.
Of course having styled my nephew I kind of felt on a roll and decided to style also my husband and the children for the occasion.
In a sun flooded medieval churchyard you could see the beaming party children. The girls were absolutely up to the task with their light colored frocks and braided long hair. The boys unfortunately clearly showed how wrongly the term civilian clothes could be interpreted by their moms. Some wore full three pieces suits with bow ties, some wore checked blouses with straw borsalinos and some wore harpers and shorts . Matteo definitely distinguished himself in Maison Scotch shorts, jackets and scarf.
Parents and grandparents had also absolutely tried their best which clearly showed how much First Communions are still a serious business in Belgium.
My brother's garden party could have come straight out of a Bertolli commercial: large garden in the sun, wooden tables full of delicious food and lots of noisy people.
I could not be more proud of my styling work, Nora the  usual fashionista in Riverwoods,  and Oliver a scruffy little rascal in Vingino were absolutely themselves.
Dennis was super dashing in Ted Baker only to disclose his true nerd nature when he saw a Rubik cube among the kids toys.
All in all it was a very successful day and I am sure you will not fail to find the sense of the divine in this bonfire of vanities.
