Is Gattaca in Noord Brabant?
Finally I get the right chance to refer to my absolute favorite science fiction movie. I know that for being the wife of a worldwide expert in sci-fi my choice might sound a bit odd but believe me this movie is really worth it and not only because of a fantastic performance of Ethan Hawk.
I guess even for the ones among you that have seen the movie it is probably not immediately apparent what the devil I want to talk about today. I will tell you in a moment.
Today we officially rejected the request of Nora's school to have Nora's IQ be tested.
Through very manipulative discussions and argumentation we had in the past already twice been lured in having her tested. As we often say in Italy making mistakes is a prerogative of humans, persevering in making mistakes is a prerogative of the devil.......we are definitely humans.
You are still waiting for the link with Gattaca. This should be found in the real reason why the school and other institutions here are so insisting in having children like Nora tested. They want a prove that it is not worth to waste good tax payers money in trying to give a proper education to children whose intellectual faculties are not satisfactorily. The step from IQ to DNA is very small and there you go Gattaca.
What Gattaca also shows is that with a strong will much determination and some cheating you can beat the system. But Gattaca is just a movie so I wonder whether we will be able to be strong, determined and cheat enough in order to win our own personal battle, for the sake of our daughter.
I also ask myself the following, we are now still allowed to refuse to have her tested, how long is it going to take before we and everybody else like us will not have this freedom anymore?
I have to admit my cowardice or maybe my superior tactic when I had my husband perform most of the discussions that led to this final formal denial. He surely managed to convey our message much more effectively than I would have at least because he seems absolutely innocuous and gullible.
We might have won this round but the game is not over and the forces of evil are continuously at work, it will take strength, determination and cheating to keep ahead of the game.
