A soccer...sorry football mom
Having to fill the void in my mind I move my mediatic interest from one international event to the other. I am now totally into this FIFA scandal which, when you follow it maniacally as I do, could results into an international crisis above and beyond football only.
I have often reported the opinion of several sociologists who stated that football in Europe has replaced war. I wonder whether football might be the cause of war. You might wonder about it if you read Putin's reactions to the FBI arresting several FIFA officials and questioning the honesty of the bidding process that assigned the 2018 world cup to Russia.
Let us be clear, being italian I am definitely not moved by allegations of extended and reiterated corrupted practices, this list of adjectives could as well be used to describe italian politics. What scares me are the monstrous economical, social and even political interests associated with FIFA and the fact that FIFA responds to only one autorithy, the authority of one single man Joseph Blatter.
In the course of the last three decades he has consistently and continuously worked to establish and ring-fence his hugely powerfull position, most of the african and asian local football associations heads would jump in the fire for him. This position simply makes him the most powefull man in the world! Without doubts.
The astonishing aspects related to this story are multiple, let's try to list some of them.
Isn't it simply romantic that just today Blatter is running for a fifth term and his only opponent is a Jordan prince. You clearly need a price to de-throne an emperor. How fabulous!
In spite of being a rotten to the bone organization FIFA seems to be truly democratic. 209 member states (mind you, more than United Nations) each of which has one vote, so all equal. How fantastic!
Michel Platini, head of UEFA, (whom I idolized through a good part of my childhood) went as far as to say that if Blatter continues leading FIFA, UEFA members might boycot FIFA's competitions (read, the World Cup). How exciting!
This evening the results of the elections will be known and as a lifelong football fan I am extremely curious on how this will develop.
In all that as been said I ask myself (and I share this question with no more than Putin), why is FBI meddling with FIFA matters? And more importantly why now? Of course as you can imagine I have an opinion on this. I think the US wants to clean house before they go big into pro football, or as they call it soccer!
