The poor side

There are many ways to discribe why I am very much enjoying Cyprus, in this post I will try to describe to you the least obvious. Just for completeness let me mention the most obvious ones

• The weather is great
• The sea is very beautiful
• The people are extremely cordial
• The facilities are to all extent up to western standard
• Parking is easy and mostly free

Now let me address what is less obvious and yet struck me the most.

As you can imagine the coast is reasonably crowded by many large hotels    facing the sea, nothing surprising here. What is really surprising is that these hotels have both rooms with view on the sea (the sea side) as well as at the back side, rooms with view on the main costal road (the poor side).

Actually to me this represents the wish of  this country to welcome the high as well as the low spenders together and in good harmony.

Resort terrains even though marked are mostly not fenced off and often facilities are shared with the public beaches.
This creates a quite harmonious mingling of folks which is definitely enjoyable.

Having visited many beach holiday locations around the world I can tell you that this is not at all common, actually I had never seen this before!

It is generally a wish of the high spenders to be separated (or segregated, I leave to you the choice of word) from the low spenders. Mostly just because they spend much and they want this difference to be seen and felt by the low spenders.

It is kind of refreshing to see that it does not have to be like that and that separation is not per se a must for a luxurious holiday.

Of all places I am not sure why it is Cyprus to teach me this.
Maybe because this is an ancient land often acting in history as a crossroad of different cultures having to accommodate for different needs in a small space. Or maybe just because they have found out that this model is financially more attractive for property developers.
I tend to believe in the first argument not because I am a dreamer but because the second is not so logical (if this model would be more profitable I assure you it would be the most common).

It is exactly this belief that makes my holiday in Cyprus really enjoyable.
